City of Dreams Macau and Artelli – The Pioneering Multi-Dimensional Art Space proudly present Legendary artist Jean-Michel Basquiat’s “Crowning Journey”. The event showcases Basquiat’s bold and innovative spirit and chronicles his rise from street artist to a celebrated art icon.

Jean-Michel Basquiat

An icon of Basquiat's work, his crown motif is a symbol of power. Basquiat used the crown to elevate subjects of his paintings, but also to comment on power dynamics present in his work.

“Crowning Journey” is brilliantly presented across four major areas at City of Dreams Macau: The Main Portal, Southwest Entrance (outdoor area), The Showroom, and Artelli – The Pioneering Multi-dimensional Art Space. Large-scale installations, multimedia, and immersive and interactive multi-dimensional experiences take the audience on an unprecedented journey, inviting them to explore the thoughts and ideas of Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Main Portal

  • The Main Portal of City of Dreams Macau is transformed into an energetic and fitting tribute to Jean-Michel Basquiat. Incredible creativity is visible from the minute you walk in, transporting visitors into the vibrant cityscape of 1980’s New York to discover the evolution of Basquiat’s  world, This area displays his early cultural influences through art and music, which can go from simple to wild with twists of sounds, visuals, symbols, strokes and colors.  At the center, stands one of the most striking installations of this event, the massive 7-meter-tall dinosaur, a creative display inspired by one of Basquiat’s most recognizable artworks from 1984, “Pez Dispenser”. There is also an interactive vinyl record stage referencing to Basquiat’s boldest painting “Now’s the Time” (1985). The stage mimics a real record player, inviting visitors to groove to the music Basquiat enjoyed.

Southwest Entrance (outdoor area)

  • At the Southwest Entrance (outdoor area) of City of Dreams Macau, Jean-Michel Basquiat’s “Brown Spots (Portraits of Andy Warhol as a Banana)” (1984) makes an astounding debut as a 10-meter-tall giant outdoor installation, breaking away from the formality of using traditional canvas.

    The Showroom

    • Jean-Michel Basquiat’s “Grillo” (1984) is showcased on the façade of The Showroom at City of Dreams Macau, displayed as a massive canvas spanning 10 meters wide, with a 6-meter-tall crown perched proudly atop. This blend of art and architecture creates a synergistic creative process, presenting a striking narrative at the heart of the Cotai Strip and establishing a new cultural landmark.
